About Us

The Midwifery Community

Access Midwifery is one of eight midwifery practices in the Victoria BC area. We are part of the Victoria Department of Midwifery, working within the Victoria General Hospital and the Vancouver Island Health Authority (VIHA). Victoria midwifery practices provide back-up, as needed, when a woman’s midwife is unavailable. Talk to your midwife about these arrangements.

All midwives in British Columbia are regulated through the College of Midwives of British Columbia. The CMBC provides current and complete information about midwives’ scope of practice and clinical competencies. They also have a web-accessible Home Birth Handbook.

B.C. midwives have a professional association – the Midwives Association of British Columbia (MABC) – that provides support to midwife members, including supporting their educational needs and ongoing professional development. The MABC also provides public education and information about midwifery.

The MABC is a member of the Canadian Association of Midwives (CAM) that brings midwives from coast-to-coast-to-coast together to discuss midwifery in different regions. CAM supports Canada’s first midwifery journal, the Canadian Journal of Midwifery Research and Practice (CJMRP). CAM works alongside the Society of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists of Canada (SOGC) and other health professional organizations to ensure the needs of childbearing women are being met.
