About Us
Growing New Midwives & Nurse Practitioners
The team at Access Midwifery and Family Care has years of experience teaching and guiding student midwives, nurse practitioners and other healthcare students. Like other B.C. practices, we provide a clinical learning environment for student midwives and nurse practitioners. We encourage you to talk to staff about how you can support students and the growth of midwifery and nurse practitioner practices in BC.
Midwives
The University of British Columbia (UBC) is one of a growing number of professional midwifery degree programs in Canada. To learn more about how midwives are educated and trained, go to www.midwifery.ubc.ca.
Midwives who have learned their skills through apprenticeship or through training and education in other countries can apply to work as midwives in B.C. through the Multi-jurisdictional Midwifery Bridging Project (MMBP). For more information about this route of entry to midwifery, go to www.cmrc-ccosf.ca.
Nurse Practitioners
Nurse Practitioner students complete a masters level program after earning a bachelor’s degree in nursing and gaining first-hand experience in the field. During a seven-semester program, students receive higher learning and clinical experience in advanced health assessment and primary care in one of three registered streams: pediatric, adult or family care.
More information about the Nurse Practitioner practice can be found at the BC Nurse Practioner website and the College of Registered Nurses website.
In B.C., programs for Family Nurse Practitioners are offered at the University of Victoria (UVic), University of British Columbia (UBC) and the University of Northern British Columbia (UNBC). Once their studies have been completed, nurse practitioners must register under the College of Registered Nurses in order to practice.
